Steamfitters local aptitude test question Hey guys I have my aptitude test next Monday for steamfitters local and was wondering what I should expect on the test. I have been studying a mechanical aptitude and spacial relations book so I am ready for the part of the test.
What else should I be reviewing before the test will there also be math, reading and science on it? I don't know the criteria now but the aptitude test used to be primarily concerned with which influential Union members you had as friends.

I am planning on applying to the local Philadelphia this coming week and was wondering if there are any other members here that could offer any advice or tips on what to expect.Experienced Pipefitter
I've been to the website and have been reading through this forum for the past couple of weeks. I'm just looking for anything I can do to get a head start. I went to my interview in a suit and tie, and acted in a business like manner. Half of the interviewers are principals in companies you will be working for. Its important to be sober on the job, keep straight so you can pass an unannounced piss test, keep your drivers license clean, don't road rage in a company truck.
Remember your shop is watching the gps. Show up on time, give shop notice if you can't make it on time or can't come in that day. Don't argue with customers. Don't steal time or material.
Don't turn down overtime or holidays. Don't laugh at these basics, I've seen guys not make thru their first year because of them.
I nearly lost my license and my apprenticeship by speeding on the job that first year. Take apprentice class seriously attendance is important. My first year I drove, a lot, be ready for it. Your first years may not seem technical, running parts, inventories, filters, don't let that discourage you, we all paid our dues.
Electricity is important by the time I was accepted into the program I was a lincoln tech grad and I had 3 years of adult night school electricity, so if you don't know it, find some way to jump start that knowledge. I been in 30 years, and even now basic electricity is king, my whole day today was an amprobe, stay-cons, wire nuts, and 16 gage stranded. Have you ever used a torch? Have you ever used gages? Have you ever used a pipe cutter?
Do you know tool basics, wrenches, sockets, allens, and screwdrivers? You could spend months looking at you tube how-tos, some are correct, some are horribly wrong, but at least you can get an idea of kind of work you will be doing, if not the proper method. Thanks for the tips hevysrf!
I like to think I'm a pretty hard, honest worker so the first part shouldn't be a problem for me. I've never used a torch but i have used gauges, pipe cutters and all the basic tools.
I have my associates in engineering science from montco with a specialization in electronics. Would that be enough to cover the basic electronic theory needed?
Also if you have any information on the application process like testing and the interview questions it would be greatly appreciated. No other organization serves the training needs of the piping industry like the United Association.
